MBTI를 통한 장르별 만화 캐릭터 성격유형 연구

Abstract

Characters are more important in comics stories in comparison with other genres with stories. However, as the characters in comics are virtual, it is hard to exactly define their nature. This study aims to frame the unclear nature of characters using The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator(MBTI), a psychological test instrument. MBTI is a psychological test indicator which was made by Briggs and Myers referring Jung's Psychological Type Theory. MBTI categorized human nature into four tendencies of preference and sub-categorized them into 16 types. This study identified appropriate characters and the relations between them using MBTI. It was the five step-process. First, characteristics of MBTI were identified. Second, comics, characters, genres and roles to apply MBTI were differentiated. Third, characters which are appropriate for genres and roles were identified. Fourth, behavioral, line and formal characteristics of representative characters of each type were analysed. The tendencies of preference used for genres and roles were identified to examine characteristics appropriate for genres and roles. Fifth, the relations between characters of each type were analysed according to genres and roles. The characteristics of characters which are appropriate for genres and roles of popular comics were identified. It will be basic data for many creators who desire to set up characters who are appropriate for genres and roles. Then, identifying the relations between roles of characters of each genre will be helpful as data to set up the relations. It is hoped that this study will be helpful as a model for creators who create characters although it can not present types of character for all the comics characters.
