- Abstract
- Title : Characteristics of Residual Vitreous Cortex after Posterior Vitreous Detachment
Purpose : To identify the biomicroscopic variations of posterior vitreous detachment(PVD) during vitrectomy and to evaluate the relationship of the specific vitreoretinal pathology and variations of PVD
Method : A restrospective study was carried out on 44 eyes who had undergone pars plana vitrectomy from May 2009 to July 2009. The authors observed the presense of primary posterior vitreous detachment using biomicrospe in operative room.
Results : Posterior vitreous detachment(PVD) had already occurred in 27 eyes of the total 44 eyes before surgery and among them, incomplete diffuse type was the most common finding (15eyes, 55.6%).
The primary PVD was seen mainly in patients with epiretinal membrane(5 eyes among 6 eyes, 83.3%), retinal vessel obstruction(8 eyes among 15 eyes, 53.3%), retinal detachment(5 eyes among 7 eyes, 71.4%). The Incomplete diffuse type PVD found primarily in patients with diabetic retinopathy and retinal detachment and complete diifuse type PVD found primarily in patients with retinal vessel obstruction and traumatic retinopathy. But, there were no statistically significant difference between groups.
Conclusion : We could identify the relationship of the specific vitreoretinal pathology and variations of PVD. The portion of vitreous cortex could be remained widely at posterior pole even after primary PVD.
