ABSTRACT

The Aesthetic Images of Urban Space in Contemporary Paintings

- Focused on the Tensional Relationship between City and Nature-

This study has the purpose of observing the direction of philosophy of art on the theoretical origin contained in the works of painter. That is aimed at checking the vision of world and arts of artist. The researcher worked with the theme called 'an image of the city space'. The researcher defined the 'aesthetic image of the city space in modern paintings' as a theme for establishing the theoretical frame on her works and focused on the meaning of city space, the human's image in the city and the tensional relationship between city and nature. Culture, art and city are the products made by human beings. The problem of human beings is an existent question given to us from the mythological ages since prehistory to the present. That became the subjective inner-exploration in Greece. And it reached to the present as a turning point to the reflection by reason as a topic of western philosophy in the end. Origins of thought on the basis of modernism are reason, rationality and absolute sciences. After that, the original reflection on modernism happened, and is shifted to the paradigm of postmodernism not pursuing the unity but focusing on difference, variety. Feelings and desires of human being surged upon in the second half of 20C and now shows a movement groping on the flexible reason based on forming the discourse through inspection of absolute reason. This study is divided into 6 parts and mentions the purpose and necessity of this study in the preface part. In chapter Ⅱ of the theme called 'pursuit of aesthetic image for the human amid the city space', this study developed its discussion as a theme of loneliness and freedom in crowd in the first paragraph and tried to express their existent meaning and privacy, limitation and hope in the various classes as a necktie image under the theme called the symbolic image of male amid the city space in the second paradigm. Also, this study researched in the subjective viewpoint defined the otherness directed subordination and freedom as conscious structure of female on dress and accessories under the theme called the female sexuality amid the city space in the third paradigm. In chapter Ⅲ of the theme called 'aesthetic city space on the life for healing a dark side of city'. Further through this study I tried to recompose the musical rhythm in the city with painterly working in the first paragraph and developed its discussion under the public fine arts on the images of lots of installation art. I want to spread this study to the thought under the theme called green life-planting in the city space covered with concrete and asphalt in the third paradigm. In chapter Ⅳ, the search for the 're-composition of the city space for communicating with nature' came out a solution of city problem under the theme called the nature scene in the city in first part and inspected their consciousness, attitude and viewpoint on the city civilization by constantly being smaller country residents in both sides of perspective and time under the theme called the city space in the nature. This study observed the city space and country space including in the respective problems, that is, the ecological reconciliation of city and nature, and in the end, the reconciliation of humans in the nature in the third part. In chapter Ⅴ, this study explored total art, eros and thanatos by Gustav Klimt, researched how the decadent value point appeared in Europe in the end of century change between 19C and 20C expressed the arts and analyzed new individualism and atomism in the cyber space in the industrial society and post-industrial society through pictorial description on the potential anxiety of existence in the other side of optimism in the period of industrial society and the loneliness of individual in the city as saying by Edward Hopper. Hundertwasser researched the co-relationships among our body, clothes, building, their social relations and ecological networking of life through his 5th skin theory considered human, nature and city in the whole and compared and inspected the painting of city, constructive re-composition and life-planting. In chapter Ⅵ, this study tried to formalize pictorially the consciousness and action type of male and female in the city under the theme called a pursuit of pictorial image of human amid the city space as analyzing the meaning included in the works of researcher. Also, this study tried to find out the change of city through color, rhythm and rhythmic feeling under the theme called a re-composition of the city space for the life. Finally, this study observed how to express life, green and nature in the city under the theme called pictorial trial for the unity of city and nature. In conclusion, the purpose of this study will be able to show as pictorial re-composition of the city space and an exploration of tensional relationship between city and nature. Now, the artist will have to become the leader to take positively part in making human and nature into a world of life not so much art of trifle or art for only art as communicating between humans and spreading the beauty on desolate city. Accordingly, we can summarize as follows:

First, this study analyzes cool-headedly the strongness and weakness of modern society and city, and must try to find out the method to solve it artistically. Second, this study makes the art culture participate in together as recovering the musical character rhythm to the city space and spreading the area of public arts. Third, this study makes ready for the opportunity inspect and practice on what is the artful plan for impressing between city and country, city and nature. Fourth, this study must spread the outside of confined concept to say 'creative product of human', the concept of art products and consider on what art is together with life. Fifth, this study tries to find out a solution in the ecological thoughts on what value can treat the problems in modern society and city, and must search for the method of response with arts on this point.
