This study was performed to find the level of knowledge and attitude toward brain death organ donation, and to identify the associated factors of that attitude of some nursing students.
Five hundred ninety six nursing students were surveyed the characteristics associated with brain death organ donation by self-administered questionnaire. The used statistical analysis methods were t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and multiple regression analysis.
Of the students, 97.7%, heard about brain death organ donation, and the main source of information was broadcasting including TV and radio. Sixty-nine percents were willing to donate their organ, and 62.8% had donated their blood. Only 5.5% of the students had previously signed a donor card consenting to their own organ donation. The mean score of student's knowledge toward brain death organ donation was 5.4±3.2, and the mean score of student's attitude was 55.2±7.0. There was no significant correlation between knowledge and attitude toward brain death organ donation.
As a result of multiple regression analysis, the associated factors of attitude toward brain death organ donation of some nursing students were religion, self-rated health, acceptance of death if family members declared brain death, and infection to their own organ donation.
In conclusion, the nursing student's knowledge of brain death organ was not adequate, however, that attitude level were relatively positive. Further research and various program are needed to promote the positive attitude toward brain death organ donation.
