Abstract
The postwar Korean Abstract art was affected by American Abstract Expressionism and Europe Informal art. Korea was on the right middle of the cold war so Korea could absorb lots of information and materials about that new art. So, from late 1950s to middle 1960s, the western Abstract art affect Korean artists a lot. In this sense, this paper looked into how they made differences with the western Abstract art and accepted it on the Korea's historical and social change.
The postwar Korean Abstract art wanted to express their will like a challenge and resistance against the established artists who liked to show off their power. They also wanted to free from the representationalism art which was the mainstream of the Korea art from Japanese colonial era. Therefore, they pursued something different. These movements began to emerge in the visible,「4 Artists」was held in 1956. Also many artists made their debut from late 1950s. The biggest example was「Contemporary Artists Union」which assumed a defiant attitude against the suppression by the mainstream of the Korean artists. They wanted to make their way, which can pursue different style of the art from academy flow.
In the late 1950s, The postwar Korea abstract art was under the american abstract Expressionism and it was also affected by France Informal art a lot, by middle of 1960s. Late 1950s and 1960s' korean abstract art have something in common with America and France art those who experienced the world war 2.
American abstract Expressionism, which was the basis of the postwar korean Abstract art, was kind of surface of projection to fight to keep existential freedom and art autonomy as a human. By contrast, the postwar Korean Abstract art performed a function as a strong stimulus for the strong western civilization energy to express new era after hopeless post war era.
In the process of expending Abstract Expressionism art, the consciousness of crisis was brought to korea artists in the late 1950s, so Korean abstract artists and western abstract shared the scar of the war and recognized as companions to survive. Like this, the Abstract Expressionism was brought into Korean art artists without correct understanding. It combined with that periodic character and progressed with the term which is called Informal. Therefore, Korean Abstract art completed as a emotional and spiritual discussion which could deal with existentially uncertainty for the artists who experienced the Korea war.
The reason why they wanted to express the new type of the art was that they tried to complete korea's task through the Abstract art, at the same time, they could pursue completely different style of the art. So, Korean artists and critics accepted new type of Abstract art emotionally with their periodical experience. On that courses postwar atmosphere affected their work again so that it represented importance which could be the basis of Korean modern art.
