Abstract

Purpose: The research was to investigate performance conditions of nurses and disability blocking effective pain management. Method: The research was investigated from April 1st 2011 to April 30th 2011 with 215 nurses working in two higher general hospitals of G city, with structured questionnaire, whose items are 21 questions of pain performance conditions and 10 of disability. Using SPSS/WIN 17.0, we conducted an independent t-test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson’s Correlation coefficients. Result: A level of pain-managing performance conditions was 3.06, ‘Moderate.’ The highest performance item was ‘record and evaluate pain an hour after medication,’ as a score of 3.48 and ‘record and evaluate from 15 to 30 minutes after intravenous and subcutaneous,’ as a score of 3.47. The lowest performance item was ‘when initial pain evaluation, patients mark it as drawing and mark X on area of the most severe pain,’ as a score of 2.52. The average of pain-managing disability was 1.75(SD=0.47), and the highest item was ‘not enough time,’ as a score of 2.57 and ‘no specific prescription,’ as a score of 2.48. The higher the age and degree subjects have with experience of pain managing education, the higher evaluation of performance conditions they have. The older subjects are, the lower a barrier they have. Conclusion and proposal: As results above, the highest performance item was found as ‘record and evaluate pain an hour after medication,’ and the lowest item was ‘not enough time.’ The higher performance conditions there are, the lower nurses recognize disability. Therefore, there requires a number of continuing education to improve a level of performance, and a group of clinical research and strategies to lower various disability.
