Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the osseointegration of contaminated implant fixture which are re-used after sterilization using various methods and osseointegration of normal sterilized implant fixture.
Materials and Methods : Six adult dogs, weighing from 10 to 15 kg, were used in this study. Fourty-eight tapered type implants with the diameter of 3.7 mm and the length of 10 mm and resorbable blasting media surface were used. On the right and left femurs of adult dogs, implants in the control group and three experimental groups were placed. With the left side for 4 weeks group and the right side for 8 weeks group, implant stability and histomorphological evaluation was performed. In the control group, normal sterilized implant fixtures were placed and in the experimental group, implants which were fallen on the floor of a clinic from an unit chair were placed. The fallen implants were sterilized using various methods. In group 1, gas sterilization by ethylene oxide was used and in group 2, 0.9% normal saline irrigation was used. In group 3, implants which were fallen on the floor were used without any treatment.
Results : At 4 and 8 weeks after implant placement, all samples showed clinically desirable osseointegration though some difference in implant stability quotient values between the control group and the experimental group existed. Though new bone formation rate was significantly lower in the control group than in the experimental group 1 and 3 at 4 weeks (p=0.04/0.002), it was the highest in the control group at 8 weeks after implant placement and no significant difference was shown(p>0.05). At 8 weeks after implant placement, the values of NBFR and bone to implant contact showed no significant difference in all groups and osseointegration was also observed in all groups(p>0.05).
Conclusion : The results suggested that when implants which were fallen on the floor of a clinic are used after cleansing and sterilizing using various methods, clinically desirable osseointegration can be observed.
