- Abstract
- Purpose: This study was conducted to examine predicting factors related to care activities for patients with dementia carried out by care providers in long-term care facilities.
Methods: This research adopted a descriptive correlational study using self-reporting structured questionnaires. A total of 200 care providers were recruited from 6 geriatric hospitals and 2 long-term care facilities located in Jeonnam province. Data were collected from March to April, 2011 after review by the ethics committee. Data were analysed by t-test, pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression analysis using SPSS program.
Results: The mean scores were 9.3 (/15 points) for knowledge, 32 (/40 points) for attitude, 104 (/135 points) for care activities. Among the sub-dimensions of care activities, daily activity management turned out to have the lowest score. Attitude toward patients with dementia had a positive correlation with care activities. A stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that subjects' experience of in-hospital education for the elderly with dementia and positive attitude towards patients predicted higher levels of care (Adjusted R2= .459, p<.001). With regard to caring for patients with dementia, in addition, the subjects rated dealing with emergency situations(7 points±2.72) on a 10-point scale as being the most burdensome situation, followed by unsanitary behavior
( 6.4 points±2.43) and aggressive and resistant behaviors(5.9 points±2.68).
Conclusions: This study suggests that in-hospital training programs focusing on case-based care activities be continuously provided to care providers to develop their positive attitude towards patients and enhance the quality of dementia care.
