Abstract
Phototherapy, such as lighting emitting diode (LED) and platelet-rich fibrin have recently been used as a means of enhancing wound healing and new bone formation in regenerative therapy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the release of three growth factors, platelet-derived growth factors-BB (PDGF-BB), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) from the PRF clot exudate serum irradiated with LED.
Blood collection was carried out on 20 healthy volunteers (non-smoker males from 22 to 27 years of age). Blood of 20 ㎖ was collected from each volunteer. Blood samples were taken in 10 ㎖ glass-coated plastic tubes (without anticoagulant) that were immediately centrifuged at 3,000 rpm (approximately 400g) for 10 minutes. LED with 618 nm wavelength and 20 ㎽/㎠ output power irradiation was applied to the PRF membranes during 20-, 40- and 60-minutes, respectively. The values of PDGF-BB, IGF-1, and VEGF from these samples after stimulating with LED was quantified by ELISA. All experiments were triplicated. The values obtained were analysed statistically the difference of the each average. The experimental results were tested by using paired t-test, with a 5% significance threshold.
Within the limits of this study, the results showed that LED irradiation influences the release of PDGF-BB from PRF as time goes.
