This study focused on the fact that the line which was the foundation of painting appeared remarkably in the contemporary painting from its history and examined the active expression of line and forms and spirit of painting understood as the formative factors.
Act drawing a line is to express everything related to human emotions and it is developed to concrete or abstract meaning depending on an artist's intention. And it may be limited to outline depending on expression method or contribute to a spatial movement and play an important role in contemporary art in the East and the West as one of formative factors which contain dynamic elements within the canvas. So the line including artistry is appeared as very complex and important factor starting from extremely essential problem in contemporary painting.
It has been found that the lines in Korean painting were liberated from simple function to regenerate an object and their autonomous functions were recognized and emerged as a formative factor playing more active roles in painting. With these, this study aimed to seek expression of figure drawing with the researcher‘s works.
The researcher made efforts to approach internal exploration of figure in that use of proper lines and artist's spirituality are important for vivid and dynamic figure drawing as the expression methods of figure. Therefore, this study is to examine starting point and progress of the researcher's materials and forms and set future development direction through the research.
The present study was designed to examine the significance of drawing in figure expression and find the artistic aesthetics of figure drawing based on the background of art history and expression forms of the East and the West.
General expression methods of figure drawing were light and shade and line without other expressions and for these, we must know bones, muscles and anatomical structures of human body. It has a thread of connection with Oriental ideas to express an object with one line in oriental paintings.
This study was to recognize the importance of energetic movement, blank and sympathy expression which are considered as important factors for figure drawing. It also examined the cases that these factors were expressed in contemporary Korean painting and analyzed their theoretical background and opinions through the researcher's works.
Artist‘s true task is not ruling forms but making form suitable to content. Only works reinterpreted in an artist’s language in his or her spirit can touch audience. Therefore, this study examined the cases that how these factors were expressed in contemporary Korean paintings and aimed to draw a new conversion to make better artistic expression and formative space based on their theoretical background through the researcher's works.
