This study interviewed 888 first and second graders from four high schools in Sunchon to identify whether they had pain on necks and shoulders and relevant factors from November 10, 2010 to November 17, 2010. The results are presented as follows:
1. 53.3% of boy students and 67.9% of girl students had pain in their necks and shoulders for the last one week. Of them, 39.8% of boy students and 57.0% of girl students had significant pain (more than once a week and 4 points of pain intensity). Both the boy and girl students had problems in their daily activities because of their pain in necks and shoulders and a problem in concentration was the most common.
2. The odds ratio (95% confidence interval) in respect to their significant pain of male subjects in second grade was 1.52(1.01-2.30), which was statistically significant.
3. For female subjects, appropriateness of desks and chairs, time to use computers and watch TV, and depression had statistically significant relations with their pain. When they considered their desks and chairs were small compared to their body figures, the odds ratio (95% of confidence interval) was 1.98(1.20-3.26). When they used computers for less than 30 minutes in comparison with that they did not use them, the odds ratio was 2.57(1.39-4.72), When depression increased 1 point, the odds ratio (95% of confidence ratio) was 1.03(1.01-1.06), which was statistically significant.
4. For girl students in the second grade who considered their desks and chairs are small, watched TV for less than 30 minutes, and had higher depression and stress, the odds ratios of significant pain in their necks and shoulders were statistically significant.
As a result of the study, it was discovered that sex, grade, height of desks and chairs, whether they are suitable for their body figures, depression, stress were risk factors of their pain in necks and shoulders. To prevent pain in their necks and shoulders, it is suggested that desks and chairs should be designed in consideration of their body figures and their psychological characteristics involving pain according to sex should be considered.
