ABSTRACT

Effects of a Taping Therapy on Shoulder Range of Motion and Pain, Physical Function and Depression in Stroke Patients.

This study is a research as Non-equivalent control group pre and post test design to identify the effect of taping therapy on movement range and pain of shoulders, physical functions and depression among hospitalized patients with stroke a geriatric hospital. Data were collected from March, 2010 to July, 2010 consisting 25patients for test group and 25 patients for the control group who were diagnosed as a stroke and hospitalized in a genatric hospital located in G-city. The subjects were categorized into test group and control group through accidental sampling and taping therapy was provided to the test group a total of 16 times twice a week and 20 minutes per a time for eight weeks. The study analysed the data using Window SPSS 14.0 Program for x2-test, Fisher′s exact test, and independent t-test.

The results of the study are summarized as follows:

1. Hypothesis 1 that ‘ the test group which had taping therapy would have increased shoulder movement compared to the control group which did not' was supported. There was a significant difference between shoulder abduction (t=-5.810, p=.001) and shoulder flexion(t=-3.695, p=.001) as a sub-hypothesis.

2. Hypothesis 2 that ‘the test group which had taping therapy would have less pain of shoulders compared to the control group which did not' was supported. There was a significant difference between pain in rpareng position (t=3.176, p=.003), and pain in moveng position(t=2.975, p=.005) as a sub-hypothesis.

3. Hypothesis 3 that ‘the test group which had taping therapy would have more physical functions compared to the control group which did not' was partially supported. As a sub-hypothesis, grip(t=-3.222, p=.002) and balance (t=2.125, p=.039) significantly increased, but no significant difference was found in daily movements(t=-1.994, p=0.05). Therefore, Hypothesis 3 was partially supported.

4. Hypothesis 4 that ‘‘the test group which had taping therapy would have less depression compared to the control group which did not' was supported (t=-3.222, p=.002).

Based on the results above, this study discovered that taping therapy increased movement range of shoulders and physical functions(grip and balance) of stroke patients and decreased their pain of shoulders and depression. Therefore, it is believed that taping therapy can be used as a nursing intervention for stroke patients in practical nursing and communities.
