This study was conducted based on the data of the fourth Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey organized by Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The subjects of the study were a total of 75,238(39,278 of male students and 35,960 female students).
As a result of the study, the relations between obesity and physical activities were discovered as follows:
1. The odd ratio of the male students who were obese and participated in violent physical activities for 1 or 2 days was 1.12 times higher than those of the subjects who did not and the odd ratio of those who participated in physical activities for 3 or 4 days was 1.17 times higher. When they participated in physical activities for more than five days, the odds ratio was 1.19 times higher. It indicates that the more obese they were, the more they participated in violent physical activities.
2. The odd ratios of the group who participated in exercise to enhance muscular strength for 1 or 2 days, 3 or 4 days and more than 5 days were 0.86, 0.66 and 0.67 respectively. It indicates that the more obese they were, the less they participated in exercise to muscular strength.
3. The odd ratio of the group who walked below 1 hour or 2 a week was 0.91 times lower than that of the group who walked less than 1 hour a week. The odd ratio of the groups who walked for more than 2 hours on weekends was 0.81 times lower than that of the group who walked for less than 1 hour on weekends.
4. The odd ratio of obese female students who participated in violent physical activities for 1 or 2 days were 1.22 times higher than that of those who did not. The odd ratio of the subjects who did violent physical activities for 3 or 4 days was 1.36 times higher. It indicates that they did exercise less than 5 days in comparison with the subjects who did not do violent exercise.
5. For middle school students, the odd ratio of the subjects who did physical activities for 1 or 2 days was 1.23 time higher than that of those who did not. The odd ratios of those who did physical activities for 3 or 4 days and more than five days were 1.34 times and 1.41 times higher respectively. It indicates that the more obese they were, the more physical activities they had.
6. The odd ratio of the subjects who walked for less than 1 hour or 2 on weekends was 1.25 times higher than that of those who walked for less than 1 hour on weekends. It indicates that female students walked less than male students.
Schools where adolescents spend most of their time should develop a variety of activity programs to encourage them to participate in more physical activities in physical education time, break time, lunch time, and after-school time. To support the direction, educational policy and students and parents' perception on physical education should be changed, and organized plans should be developed through cooperation with experts of communities.
