A Comparative Study on Foreign Policies of Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao Yang, Bing Advisor: Prof. Oh, Soo-Yol, Ph.D Department of Politics and Diplomacy Graduate School of Chosun University

China's economy has been greatly developed since the 30 years of its reform and opening up, especially under the difficult world economic background. China has become the world second largest economy, the first foreign exchange reserves and a new world power in the world with GDP average annual growth of 9%. However, China threat, China's responsibility and China's exchange rate problem also emerged into the world at the same time. During the two ruling periods of Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao, China’s foreign policies changed fundamentally along with the development of reform and opening up. In Jiang Zemin’s period, China succeeded in becoming the inside country of world system from the outside, actively engaged in foreign diplomacy, improved the relationships with well developed countries, and participated in all kinds of international organizations. All these were to create a favorable external environment for national economic development. Under Hu Jintao’s period, China has maintained rapid growth on economy and substantial increase in strength. So the foreign policies’ trend changed from a single type to a round-type compound. China developed much more active foreign policies to promote the international political and economic reform and tried to guide and lead its direction. This thesis analyzed and compared China’s foreign policies between governments of Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao, predicted development direction of China's foreign policies and the affections on neighboring countries such as Korea and the whole world.
