(Background) Osteoporosis is a significant comorbidity in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This study examined the prevalence of osteoporosis in COPD patient with steroid inhalation.
(Method) The bone mineral densities(BMDs) of the lumbar spine and femoral bone were measured in 18 patients with clinically stable COPD and 19 control subjects showing a normal lung function. Osteoporosis was defined as a T-score <-2.5.
(Result) Using the T-score, the prevalence of osteoporosis in COPD patients with steroid inhalation was not higher than the age, gender and BMI-matched controls.
(Conclusion) The prevalence of osteoporosis in COPD patients appears to be not affected by steroid inhalation. This result suggest that steroid inhalation is not associated with the risk of osteoporosis.
