Abstract
Regional torrential rains have been frequently occurring due to global climate changes and anomaly climate. Regional torrential rains are accidental and concentrated in particular regions, so weather forecast is difficult due to these characteristics. It is the weather radar data that is used as the most important data for forecasting the regional torrential rains.
This research is to conduct comparative analysis on the rain intensity of expected rainfall depth of the research-use X-band dual-polarimetric radar with that of actually measured AWS rainfall depth and to utilize the weather radar data with high limit of resolution to enhance the degree of accuracy in short time forecast of rainfalls.
For this research, radar echo and AWS rainfall depth data of each spot from July 28, 2009 to November 30, 2009 were used, and the echo analysis and statistical analysis were conducted on the 6 cases observed during the above-mentioned period.
The results of analyzing the degree of correlation of radar echo and actually measured AWS rainfall depth showed that stratiform rain with small rainfall depth was found to have higher degree of correlation.
The results of evaluating the rain intensity by Z-R relational expression in the 5 cases of this research showed that the rainfall depth estimated by X-band dual-polarimetric radar was underestimated, compared with the actually measured AWS rainfall depth. However the degree of correlation between radar echo and actually measured AWS rainfall depth is found to be high. Accordingly, a new Z-R relational expression that integrates weighting functions is considered necessary.
There can be a slight error since the radar rain intensity used in this research used data of only the 0.5° elevation angle that is closest to the ground. Accordingly, if many cases and the radar echo with observatory elevation angle of high degree of correlation are used through continuous researches, more accurate estimation of rainfall depth through weather radar will be possible.
