- Abstract
- On the road ahead, we know that we feel desire and urge constantly. At the end of them to which we finally face taboo related. We also establish our independence and develop mentality dreaming of meeting suppressed desire. Fantastic literature is originated from this individual mentality dreaming of independence establishment, satisfaction of desire and destroying taboo. Most Korean old-novels lean on such fantasy. The desire suppressed by socially accepted idea found an escape from novels of the age and it has been read giving lessons. As time went by, realism novels dominated the literature while fantastic literature was relatively devaluated because it was considered not to reflect the realities but only pursuit amusement. On the other hand, in the west, fantasy novels such as gothic novels, fantastic literature and magical realism win popularity. But few fantasy novels were on the bestseller list in the 1990's and failed to attract continued interest in Korea.
Since then, western fantastic literature theory was introduced and we got started on the study of fantasy novels. But the theory was inappropriate for korean fantasy novels. The emphasis on the need for the theory appropriate for Korean culture has made active discussions.
First of all, the term 'fantasy' must be clearly defined to consider fantastic property. Then we search for a reason why western fantastic literature theory doesn't fit Korean fantastic literature examining English - American fantasy novels and Central - South American fantasy novels. From old times, fantasy novels always has been with us. Because we shed new lights on it currently, we will also search for the backgrounds of such interest into three parts.
This study is focused on property of Korean fantasy novels from short stories after the 2000's. Fiction Stories are gaining popularity from young people in Korea while full-length novels prevail in West. At this time, study on the currently active authors, Park Min-gyu, Pyeon Hye-yeong, Hwang Jeong-eun who display fantastic property in their works will provide us with solid foundation to get deeper understanding. In this thesis we search for the social imagination of fantasy Fiction Stories from「The Hat」and「Roly Poly & Trush」of Hwang Jeong-eun and we have an opportunity to be concerned about alienation in capitalism from「korean standards」and「Dildo saves our family」of Park Min-gyu. Finally, we search for the fantasy of modern society in danger of gradual collapse of humanism from 「Aoi garden」 and 「Reservoir」 of Pyeon Hye-yeong showing man living like animal at the world of ambiguousness made by ambiguous border between human and animal.
