Abstract

Perception of Parents on Elementary School Dental Health Clinic

Objectives; Maintaining a good oral health for the elementary school children is one of the primary goals of the school dental health program, which is also designed to promote parents'; interest and cooperation in this endeavor. To assess the level of parental awareness of the school oral health program, an experimental group and a control group were compared.

Material and Methods; The experimental group consists of 468 student subjects from Seoung-Dong Elementary School in Sunchon City, and the control group consists of 834 students from Yisu Elementary School. As for the parents, 122 were randomly chosen for the experimental group, and 144 for the control group. A questionnaire survey was distributed to the subject';s home and the return rate was 100%. The questionnaire contained18 questions in total of which 4 questions regarding the school dental clinic, 5 regarding the need for such program, and 2 regarding the effects, all of which were 3 point scale. The data analysis was performed using the χ2 contingency table techniques. The Cronbach Alpha for the reliability of the survey responses was 0.720. Results;

1. The experimental group's awareness of the school oral health program was about 13.8% higher than that for the control group, and 14.2% higher in awareness of oral health education and preventive care than that for the control group (p <0.05).

2. The experimental group's awareness of treatment cost operating under the school dental clinic was 15.9% higher than that for the control group (p=0.029).

3. At least 90% of both groups indicated that it is necessary to maintain School Oral Health Project, and approximately 80% expressed the need for prevention of dental caries. There were no statistically significant difference between the groups (p> 0.05).

4. About 50% of the subjects expressed the need for promoting the project in the community (p <0.05)
