These days, Gyeomjae's artistry has had a lot of influence on young artists and scholars. In particular, there have been a number of attempts to reinterpret his philosophy and apply it to contemporary painting. This study aims to discover the connections between the past and the present through Gyeomjae's Jingyeongsansoo and examine potential paths for future directions.
The ultimate goal of Gyeomjae's painting was to represent the harmonious principles of the universe and the actual states of nature. In other words, to realize actual landscapes using devices or media.
The author's painting reinterprets Jingyeongsansoo, in which the Utopia is colored and looks real. Bugambeop: an aspect through which a bird looks down on objects and landscapes from the air, was used in the current work, the sense of broad space was represented through changes in points of view. Also, points of views and planes were connected using a technique of multi-sided points of view which is far different
from western style perspective drawing. The author's painting borrowed Gyeomjae's technique using airplanes or hot-air balloons for emphasis of a broad sense of space. The top and side views of the airplanes were exposed for changes in points of view. The person in the painting looks up and down the mountain to access real aspects of the mountains and trees. The canvass is composed to look at objects from a distance, as well as reality and illusion, the past and present, details and scales, changes and pauses all coexist in it. The author suggests that works of art are complete and new landscapes can be achieved when various points of views are mixed. As real as nature is, the gaze of viewers makes the space live. In this painting, a broad artistic space was intended.
Gyeonmjae used quick strokes, short dots, end points, and weak lines in drawing techniques. This painting used Gyeomjae's vertical drawing technique of fine strokes.
Objects such as mountains, bodies of water, rocks, trees, houses, and characters which frequently appear in Gyeomjae's painting were imbued with vitality through metaphor, symbols, and imagination. This painting focused on the contemporary representation of mountains and trees in the past through modern characters, symbols, metaphor, and imagination. In this way, this painting recreated Gyeomjae's style, in the hope that the ideals and imaginations of the Utopia can be shared.
In conclusion, this study is to uncover elements of actual mountains and trees using experiment and to maximize their effect and potential with a new perspective.
