- Abstract
- Objectives: In this study, we evaluated the absorbed doses to the organs which had known heavy damaging effect by radiation and calculated the effective doses when using the digital panoramic radiographys for diagnosis in major organs of patient's oral and maxillofacial region.
Methods: The absorbed dose averages in major organs of oral and maxillofacial region were measured using the Dental head phantom (CIRS Co., USA), nLi2B4O7 TLD chip (Thermoluminescent dosemeter UD-807, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., JPN) and UD-716AGL dosemeter (Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., JPN) when performing indirect and direct digital panoramic radiographys. Effective doses were calculated from correspond to ICRP 2007 recommendations for indirect and direct digital panoramic radiographys
Results: 1. The absorbed dose average on indirect and direct digital panoramic radiographys was highest in parotid glands as measured 1259.6 uGy (micro Gy) and 680.7 uGy (micro Gy) respectively. Absorbed dose average in another organs were high in order of esophagus, submandibular gland, tongue and thyroid gland on both types of digital panoramic radiographys.
2. The absorbed dose average was higher on indirect type than direct one (p<0.05).
3. The effective dose was higher on indirect type than direct one as measured 13.28 uSv (micro Sv) and 8.70 uSv (micro Sv) respectively.
Conclusions: Taken together, the absorbed doses in salivary gland and oral mucosa were higher than in thyroid gland. However, thyroid gland demands the attention on radiography due to radiation weighting factor of tissue is high in spite of showed the low absorbed dose.
