Abstract
An Analysis on Artificial Dental Plaque Removal of Toothbrushes

Objectives : Toothbrushing is the most fundamental self-help oral care as it is essential for the removal of dental plaque and food debris which can lead to caries or periodontal diseases. To this end we endeavor to help the patients select an effective toothbrush and maintain oral health care by investigating the removal of dental plaque according to the type of toothbrushes on the market.

Materials and methods : The total of 48 pieces, 8 pieces each from three types of the standard manual toothbrush and three types of the slim bristle toothbrush for adults were randomly selected to be used as experiment units. The length and diameter of the toothbrushes were measured by using Vernier caliper(Mitutoyo, Japan), the loss of elasticity on toothbrush by Brushing machine(LG, Korea), the stiffness by Zwick 1120 Universal testing machine, and artificial dental plaque mounted on dentiform was replicated 8 times each and measured by IT Plus 4.0 microscope (SOMETECH, Korea). Data analysis was performed by Kruskal Wallis test and Man- Whitney s U-test, Multiple linear regression at the significance level of alph =0.05.

Results :
1. The average stiffness of the toothbrushes was 5.65cN/㎟ for the standard manual toothbrushes, and 4.98cN/㎟ for the slim bristle toothbrushes. The standard manual toothbrushes is statistically significantly stiffer on the average than the slim bristle toothbrushes(p<0.05).

2. The average loss of elasticity was 22.83% for the standard manual toothbrushes, and 11.52% for the slim bristle toothbrushes. The loss of elasticity for the standard manual toothbrushes is statistically significantly greater on the average than the slim bristle toothbrushes(p<0.05).

3. The average surface area from which the dental artificial plaque was removed using the standard manual toothbrushes was 116.41㎟ and using the slim bristle toothbrushes it was 121.82㎟. The average buccal surface area from which the dental artificial plaque was removed using the standard manual toothbrushes was 86.93㎟, and using the slim bristle toothbrushes 88.11㎟. The average dental subgingival area from which the dental artificial plaque was removed using the standard manual toothbrushes was 4.95㎟ and using slim bristle toothbrushes 5.32㎟. The average proximal surface from which dental plaque using the standard manual toothbrushes it was 24.79㎟, and using the slim bristle toothbrushes 28.38㎟. A statistically significant difference between the standard manual toothbrushes and the slim bristle was detected in the proximal surface(p<0.05).

4. For the group consisting of the standard manual toothbrush, It was found that the smaller the difference in the length of implant brush, the greater the amount of plaque that was removed(p<0.05).
