Abstract
This study aims at providing the basic materials to establish the history of Taekwondo centering around Jeonnam and Gwangju regions.
Preceding studies of the history of Taekwondo were limited to its orthodoxy and local culture neglected it. The studies of local history of Taekwondo were the 50-year history of Jeju Taekwondo and the history of Taekwondo game in Daegu, Gyeongbuk. It is regrettable that the local history of Taekowndo which has the same history, was often influenced by each history, created a new tradition and made an independent culture was neglected. As there are no materials of the history of Taekwondo by Jeonnam․Gwangju Taekwondo Association and no concrete data of it, it is very urgent to ensure basic and professional materials necessary for establishing the history of Taekwondo.
This study used witness from seniors who practiced and distributed Taekwondo in the initial stage as oral materials and was supported by the data from Korea Taekwondo Association, Jeonnam Taekwondo Association and Gwangju Taekwondo Association. Therefore, it is considered that the research of history of Taekwondo centering around Jeonnam and Gwangju will be significant in developing Taekwondo.

The results of the study are summarized as follows.

First, the modern Taekwondo was begun in Jeonnam and Gwangju regions in the late 1953 and Taekwondo instruction and training were performed at Changmugwan by Jeon Cheol, Mudeokgwan by Kim Chang Shin, and Cheongdogwan by Lee Gwang Jae and they contributed to the extension of Gongsudo, Taesudo and Dangsudo trainees. As Odogwan was opened in 1961, Taekwondo was distributed to Jeonnam region and according to the elder directors, Cheongdogwan was largest in its scale and had the greatest influence on the development of Taekwondo in Jeonnam and Gwangju.

Second, Jeonnam Taekwondo Association was promoted to the sport organization of Jeonnam Sports Association in 1962, Korea Taesudo Association appointed Jeon Chel to the chairman of Organizing Committee of Jeonnam Taesudo Association. Jeon Cheol organized Jeonnam Taesudo Association with Changmugwan (Jeon Cheol), Odogwan (Kim Su Ryeon), Cheongdogwan (Lee Gwang Jae), and Mudeokgwan (Kim Chang Shin).

Third, according to the development of Taekwondo game in Jeonnam and Gwangju, Kim Man Seok selected university player and Jeon Cheol did high school player for the 44th National Athletic Meet held in Jeollabukdo, 1963 and coached them. Therefore, Jeonnam and Gwangju Taekwondo team's participation in the 44th National Athletic Meet was the starting point of development of Taekwondo in these regions.

Fourth, Jeonnam and Gwangju Taekwondo Team ranked the first in national competition in 1970s and Huh Song who participated in the 2nd World Championship Meet ranked the first. In 1977, Jeonnam Taekwondo Team won at the 58th National Athletic Meet and verified the improvement of its performance ability.

Fifth, most of school Taekwondo team members had training at their own center due to the lack of Taekwondo facilities. School sport was not prevailed and there were no enough coaches as well as training facilities. Athletes took the training under the guidance of directors. In 1960s, Chosun University began to train Taekwondo athletes first in Jeonnam region and Ryu Ho Pyeong of Sukmun High School (current Songwon High School) coached Taekwondo from 1966 and his athletes took part in Taekwondo competition in uniform.

Sixth, the foundation of Taekwondo team centering around Sukmun High School, Chosun University and other agencies from the mid-1960s was extended to various areas including high school and university in the mid-1970s. In 1978, Jeonnam Sport High School ranked the 2nd at the 13th Presidential Group Competition and showed the top level performance. ability. Now there are 21 elementary schools, 34 middle schools, 23 high schools, and 6 universities and colleges which support the Taekwondo team in Jeonnam region. Gwangju region has 7-8 elementary school Taekwondo teams, 5 middle school Taekwondo teams, 4 high school Taekwondo teams, and 1 university Taekwondo team. The increase of school Taekwondo teams makes a great contribution to the improvement of regional Taekwondo power.

Seventh, the athletes who played the most important roles in improving the performance were Huh Song who took part in the 2nd World Championship Meet in 1974 and ranked the 1st at the international competition first in Jeonnam and Gwangju regions, Im Dae Taek who took part in the 4th World Championship Meet in 1979 and ranked the first, and Jeong Guk Hyun who took part in the 5th, 6th and 7th World Championship Meet and ranked the first and participated in the 6th Asian Championship Meet and ranked the first. Also Lee Gye Haeng took part in the 10th Asian Game and the 88' Olympic Games and ranked the first and played a great role to develop the Taekwondo performance in Jeonnam.
