Study on the Illustration in Movie poster ---Focusing on Korea and Chinese Movie poster---

A movie poster is undoubtedly a tool for applying the movie content, but it can also induce people to see the movie; therefore, it is not only a kind of plastic art, it is also of importance as a media of visual communication. Although we can see movie posters even everywhere as those in the news, journals, subways, bus stops, etc., it is not an easy job to design a notable and fantastic movie poster. A wonderful movie poster design can impress people a lot, and then could be an activator for him or her to see the movie. In this way, a movie poster is also a movie’s "name card." There is certain difference between Korean and Chinese movie industrial development, but living in the same Asian cultural environment, both of them inevitably bring out some similar aspects. Besides, both of them carry forward the same traditional aesthetic culture. Therefore, either from its referential value or its actual feasibility, it is of significance to compare the two countries’ movie posters’ Illustration, and learn from the comparison. Based on the valuesabove, the significance and purpose of this thesis is shown in Chapter I, as well as the methodology and range. Beside, some theoreticalstatement is also presented about movie posters and Illustration. In Chapter II, we can get how the movie posters developed both in Korea and China, and what we can see from them in both countries in nowadays. In Chapter III, based on the classification, I set certain methods to analyze different kinds of movie posters of both countries. Through the former review and analysis, some conclusions can be drawn as follows: Firstly, there is no multifarious inserted movie posters style right now both in Korea and China, instead, most of them show the Illustration through the descriptions about movies’leading actor, leading actor and supporting actor, or actors and environment. Secondly, with the development of science, under the assist of computer, we can not only design various movie poster Illustration within short time, we can also draw out some pictures and imaginary figures that we cannot draw by hands before. Third, in order to stand on the stage of the world, Korean and Chinese designers are expected to have certain cultural literacy, rich special knowledge and advanced technologies, but what is more important is that they should have innovative concepts, multifariouspresentation formats to create movie poster plates with national characteristics. The one hundred movies posters which I chose from 2003 to 2008 are the most popular ones both in Korea and China, but not all the popular ones should have been the best ones. Under this situation, I look back on some excellent movie posters and find their shortcomings in order to feel a right way for the development both for Korean and Chinese movie poster designs.
