의 구조와 의미지향성 분석

Abstract

文無子 李鈺(1760~1815)은 조선후기의 한 文士로서 우리나라 패사소품체(稗史小品體)문학의 뛰어난 작가였다. 중세적 질서를 지탱하는 성경현전(聖經賢傳)의 사상 및 문체에서 벗어나 현실의 다양한 면모와 각양각색의 인물군상을 생동감 있게 그려냈으며 봉건적 이데올로기의 폐쇄성에서 벗어나려는 지향을 보여주었다. 그러나 정통문체가 아닌데다 봉건질서를 위협하는 불경스럽고 기이한 문체라 하여 배격되었고 그 때문에 出仕의 길이 완전히 막혀 버린 불우한 문인이었다. 그러나 끝까지 고집한 그 문장은 중심에서 찾지 못한 주변적 가치의 소중함을 일깨워 주었으며 결과적으로 근대문학의 가교역할을 했다고 할 수 있다. 은 그가 남긴 25편의 傳 가운데 하나로 서울 양반 계층의 심생과 중인층 여자와의 비극적 사랑을 그리고 있는 작품이다. 변화하는 시대의 질곡 속에서 天道之理로서의 男女之情을 그리고 있으면서도 시정세태에 대한 객관적인 거리를 유지하고 있는 이옥의 대표작이라 할 만하다. 의 서사의 구성은 남녀 주인공들의 행위의 발전을 중심으로 만남, 기다림, 결연, 이별, 죽음의 순서로 진행되고 있으며 만남에서 결연에 이르기까지의 과정이 이별과 죽음에 이르는 대목보다 훨씬 확대되어 있다. 결연과정의 확대는 치밀하게 계산된 기법에 의해서 중인여성이 사족 남성의 구애를 받아들이기까지 그녀의 내면에서 치열하게 전개된 심리적 갈등의 추이를 긴장감 있게 서사화하는 데 성공했다. 이러한 서사의 과정, 즉 만남에서 결연, 이별과 죽음에 이르기까지의 과정은 상호 대립구조를 이루고 있다. 만남에서 결연에 이르는 전반부는 긴장감 있게 구성하여 관심을 집중시킨 것과 달리 이별에서 죽음에 이르는 후반부는 시선을 외부로 분산시켜 시간과 공간이 확대되고 사건이 요약적으로 제시되고 있다. 전반부에서는 남녀지정의 자연스런 발로라 할 수 있는 眞情의 의미가 실현되고 있는가 하면 후반부에서는 견고한 사회의 벽 앞에서 무기력하게 무너지고 마는 주인공들의 모습을 배치시켜 서사의 대립적 상황을 제시하고 있다. 작가는 이러한 서사의 대립구조를 통해 당대의 상황을 여실히 보여주고 있는 셈이다. 의 남주인공 심생은 풍류낭자로서의 열정으로 결연에 성공하지만 이후에 발생된 문제에 대해서는 지극히 소극적이고 무책임한 태도를 보여준다. 이는 철저히 내면화된 지배계층의 의식을 보여주는 것이나 처녀의 유서를 받고 자신의 진로를 바꿈으로써 그에 대한 심리적 변화를 드러내고 있다. 이는 심생이 기존의 가치에 머물러 있지 않고 발전적으로 변화하고 있음을 보여주는 것이라고 하겠다. 여주인공인 처녀도 심생과의 첫 만남에서부터 교감이 없었던 것이 아니지만 심생의 구애를 쉽게 받아들이지 않고 매우 신중한 면모를 보인다. 현실에 대한 냉철한 인식을 바탕으로 불행한 결과를 예상했기 때문이지만 결국은 비장한 결단을 하게 된다. 진정을 따른 것이며 거기에는 세계에 대한 처녀의 도전의식이 깔려 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 그런데 매화외사의 평에 이르면 행적부에서 보여준 서술자의 태도와는 달리 다소 엉뚱한 이야기로 시선을 분산시키고 있는데 이는 작품이 갖는 강렬한 메시지를 완화시키는 역할을 하고 있다. 비극적 정조를 띤 애정소설은 대체로 깊은 여운을 남기면서 주인공의 좌절된 사랑 이면에 놓인 사회현실을 심각하게 반성하게 하는 힘을 갖는다. 따라서 은 논찬부의 주제왜곡에도 불구하고 인간의 진정을 추구했다고 볼 수 있으며 그러한 진정이 방해받을 수밖에 없는 모순된 사회현실을 고발한 작품이라 하겠다. 또한 적극적이고 강한 도전의식을 지닌 여주인공과 변화된 남주인공의 내면을 드러냄으로써 작가가 지향하고자 하는 세계를 구현해 내었다고 하겠다.|ABSTRACT Analysis of the Structure and Orientation of Meanings in Shimsaeng-jeon

Lee Ok (1760~1815) also known as Munmuja was one of the men of letters in the late Chosun and an outstanding author of the Korean literary style, ‘Paesasopum (unofficial histories and miscellaneous notes).’ Beyond the oppressive ideology and literary style of ‘seonggyeong-hyeonjeon (Confucian scriptures and interpretations)’ which supported the feudal dominance, Lee Ok vividly described various aspects and diverse characters in reality and aspired to overcome the narrowness of the feudal ideology. However his critics rejected and condemned his literary style as unconventional, disrespectful and strange which challenged the feudal order. As a result he led a misfortunate life completely deprived of any kind of opportunity to achieve success in society. Nevertheless he never gave up his unique literary style which highlighted the value of the ‘margin’ that could not be found in the ‘center.’ Here, it can be said that he eventually functioned as a bridge to the modern literature. Shimsaeng-jeon is one of the 25 collections he left behind and it describes a tragic love story between Shimsaeng, an aristocrat in Seoul, and a lower class (jungin) woman. It is the most representative work of Lee Ok, in which the romantic love as a law of nature was described along the tribulation and challenge of the changing society. Simultaneously it makes an observation for the contemporary life and social conditions objectively from a distance. Centered on the development of activities of the main male and female characters, the narrative structure of Shimsaeng-jeon proceeded from their first encounter, waiting, forming a relationship, separation to death in this order. Here, the process from the encounter to the relationship formation was significantly extended compared to the process from the separation to death. The extension of the relationship formation process was described by the meticulously calculated technique, where the successful narrativization with suspense was achieved by describing psychological conflicts of the lower class (jungin) woman fiercely unfolding in her inner world prior to her ultimate acceptance of the aristocrat’s courtship. Such processes of narrativization, from the encounter to the relationship formation, and from the separation to death, were set as a reciprocal confrontation. The first half of the work, that is, from the encounter to the relationship formation, was structured with suspense to intrigue reader’s interest and attention. On the other hand the second half of the work, that is, from the separation to death, was structured to disperse focus to the external, hence extending time and space and presenting events as a summary. The true love was realized as a natural manifestation of the love between a man and a woman in the first half of the work. Meanwhile a narrative contrast was presented in the second half by showing the main characters who failed helplessly against the rigid social customs. Here, the author explicitly displayed contemporary social conditions through the confrontational narrative structure. The main character Shimsaeng in Shimsaeng-jeon succeeded in forming a relationship with the woman driven by his passion as a good natured man of refined taste, however he became passive and irresponsible for the consequential events. It reveals the consciousness of the ruling class thoroughly internalized. However, his psychological change can be identified when he changed his path upon receiving the note left behind by his dead lover. It indicates that Shimsaeng is not a flat character remaining passive within the existing value system, but a progressively developing character. The female main character also felt connected upon the first encounter with Shimsaeng but she acted with utmost caution by not accepting his courtship readily. It was due to the fact that she predicted unfortunate consequence based on the cool-headed perception on the reality. However she finally made a courageous decision following her genuine emotions and such action verifies her underlying spirit of challenge for the world. From the part of ‘Maehwa-oesa’ critique, a distraction with rather abrupt story occurred in contrast with the narrator’s approach in the part of main events. It functioned as a buffer to lessen the intensity of the message of this work. The romance novel with tragic overtone leaves a profound resonance in general and encourages readers to reconsider social conditions which affect the failed love between the main characters. Accordingly, in spite of the distortion of the subject matter in its critical notes, Shimsaeng-jeon can be evaluated as the work which valued genuine human emotions and criticized the absurd social conditions interfering with such genuine emotions. Moreover the author conjured up a world he aspired through the active female character possessing the spirit of challenge and the inner world of the male character with changed perception.
