- Abstract
- Improper hand washing causes many diseases, while proper hand washing may prevent those diseases. However, there exist a controversy on which types of hand washing is proper for prevention of those diseases.
The purpose of this study was to compare with the effects of different types of hand washing by counting the number of bacteria on the hand surface.
Eighteen clinicians were chosen and divided into three groups consisted of six clinicians each.
Culturing on right raw palms in all groups was performed. Individuals in the groupⅠ washed hands for 5 seconds with antimicrobial liquid soap. GroupⅡ washed their hands for 10 seconds with antimicrobial liquid soap. GroupⅢ washed with an instant alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
After that, reculturing was performed on right raw palm in each group after washing.
These samples were cultured for 48 hours aerobically. The colony-forming units (CFU) were calculated at each time point and reduction rate of CFU among 3 groups were statistically evaluated using ANOVA.
All groups showed a significant decrease on CFU according to time applied(P<0.05). And the reduction rate of CFU between group 1 and 2 showed statistically significant difference, but groupⅡandⅢ were not significant difference.
The present study confirmed that the instant hand sanitizer was an excellent antiseptic agent.
And there were significant difference on the reduction rate of the number of bacteria between 5 and 10 seconds when they scrubbed with antimicrobial liquid soap.
