Watercolor was advanced through the development of materials and it was originated in wall painting of Lascaux Grotto or fresco in Egypt in Old Stone Age. These were made of soil, rock and charcoal obtained from nature and attached to wall by mixing them into water using bar or tube, and then black colors from burning willow branch and white colors were mixed with Arabic rubber and the white of egg which became the early dyes. Egyptians made paper using papyrus and painted letter and picture on it. After that paper was produced by Fabriano in Italy in 1276 and paper using wood was made by James Watman in 1770. In addition, the colors of a good quality were produced by William Windsor and Henry Newton in 1835 and it brought about the development of watercolor.
Watercolor was first introduced to Korea by Remion, French ceramist who visited Korea by Korean government's invitation before or after 1900 and expressed sketch with watercolors. Artists who came back home after studying at art school in Japan in the mid-1910 exhibited their watercolor works to art exhibition and recognized their artistry. But, as the size of their works was larger in 1950s, oil painting works of large size were in increasing trend and watercolors were gradually isolated. Moreover, as watercolors introduced through Japan didn't enjoy the freedom of expression de to the limitation of paper size and preservation of material, it could succeed to its thread of life as a practice piece for other works. Such a recognition of watercolors has been continued and while materials of good quality were developed and there are many excellent watercolor artists, it is true that it has not been recognized as an independent genre.
This study confirmed that watercolor has many advantages like convenience of work and various expression effects using water compared to other materials and one of these advantages to express the depth of work using easily obtained object was suggested through the researcher's works. It also examined contingency from dry speed of water, effect of intended contingency, and that of mixing objects such as salt, sand and coffee. In addition, it was to suggest various basic techniques of watercolors through several expression effects shown in using other tools such as sandpaper, blade or toilet paper and other agents like masking liquid. This study also investigated unique effects of watercolors expressed by completing a work through mixture or extension of these techniques and complement of shortcomings. It examined human attitude toward nature and recognized the cause of losing identity and isolation in the process of materialization of human beings. To overcome these phenomena, this study recognized the essence of human being as weakness through the circulation of nature and was to realize the reason of life through thinking.
In conclusion, watercolor was neglected as a practice piece due to unstable materials in early stage of its introduction, but preservation and freedom of expression were possible due to the development of materials. It is expected that it will be recognized as a medium to be developed as an independent genre if various expression methods of water and depth of its content are researched more.
