Predictors of Depression in Geriatric Medical and Welfare Facilities Residents

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the predicting factors on depression of Geriatric Medical and Welfare Facilities Residents in a city. Method: The subjects were 125 elderly who reside in a geriatric medical welfare facilities. Study instrument for family-support was 5-point 7-items designed by Choi (2008), for perceived health status 5-point 5-items designed by Lim (1998). and for depression 5-point 15-items designed by Bae (2005). Data were collected by structured questionnaires from Sep 29th to Oct 23th 2009, and analyzed with the descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation Coefficients, and Stepwise Multiple Regression using SPSS/Win 15.0 program. Result: Mean score per item of family-support was 2.93, perceived health status score 2.57, and depression score 3.40. Depression showed a negative correlation with perceived health status (r=-.439, ｐ<.001). However family-support (r=-.100, ｐ=.393) is not correlation. In addition, variables that predicted depression were perceived health status, perceived economic status, and attitude of staff for elderly (33.6%). Conclusion: Based on findings from this study, it should be developed geriatric mental health program to prevent depression of elderly who reside in a geriatric medical and welfare facilities.
