Abstract

ABSTRACT Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Victims of Gwangju Democratic Uprising(I)

Objectives : This study estimated the degree and prevalance of PTSD in Victims of Gwangju Democratic Uprising and investigated PTSD symptom and relationship between life stress and sociodemographic characteristics.

Methods : Subjectives were victims of Gwangju Democratic Uprising and their family, 10% of them were choosen randomly. Clinitian administred subjectives to draw up questionnaires through home visiting and interviewing with subjectives.

Results : Above 29.5% of victims of Gwangju Democratic Uprising were suffered from PTSD and their general health state was poor (because of high score in anxiety, depression, somatic complaints scale). In demographic characteristics, the more they had higher age, the more they were under stress and they had poor general mental health state. The more they were well-educated, the more they were had good general mental health state. In socioeconomic characteristics, the more they had higher family income a month and good family relationship, the more they were had good general mental health state and much less stress. Also, the higher the degree of PTSD, the higher the number of types of drinking.

Conclusion : Victims of Gwangju Democratic Uprising were in serious condition of PTSD symptom. Their socioeconomic state was very poor. So We, as a nation level, should be very concerned about family members and victims of Gwangu Democratic Uprising.
