Abstract
The development of high power short wavelength light emitting diodes (LED) in the late 90s created the potential of a solid state UV curing source. The benefit factors of the LEDs can be introduced as low heat, portability and low power consumption. These advantages are particularly attractive for the curing of various adhesives, inks, and coatings in applications where dimensional stability of the substrates is required. In this work, we investigated the effects of the inert atmospheres, the photosensitizer, the dual curing systems, and the pigment on the curing behavior and the surface properties of UV-LED curable color coating systems by photo-DSC, FT-IR/ATR, and stain resistance analysis. The results showed that the polymerization reactivity and the conversion for the formulation system with ITX and for the process system in inert gases were higher than the corresponding values for the systems without ITX and ambient system. With the demonstration, we could conclude that the dual curing (UV-LED -> UV) system was a strong candidate method to optimize the process for the system where both excellent surface hardness and through curing are required.
