"Variation" is a form of composition which mainly uses the basic theme. It was long been accepted that the principle of variation is one of the essential skills for composition. It's origin comes from the tendency to give variety to the basic theme.
However, the way of giving variety has changed according to the changes of the society.
As a form of composition, variation started at the early 16C along with the development of Lute & keyboard instruments.
Ludwig van Beethoven held an advantageous position in western music
(more than anyone else) and showed remarkable results in a transition period between the classic period and the romentic period.
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) broke from a general variation that was formed on the ground of harmony structure of a theme that had been popular till the classic period.
He raised the possibility of variation techniques to the high level with using character variation.
Character variation makes a change freely in any cases from melody of a theme to the structure harmonically or tonality.
For Beethoven, the variation is a form that occupies an important position next to the sonata.
He composed altoghter 20 variations for piano solo including "32 Variation in c minor, WoO.80."
This thesis is a study on "32 Variation in c minor" a work of Beethoven's middle years, composed in 1806.
His thesis examines Beethoven's variations work and characteristics each period with periodical and general.
Consideration of variations and understands the work systematically with examining the characteristic of each variations of "32 Variation in c minor."
The following facts were gathered after careful investigation and evaluation : the factor of chaconne related to the Baroque era were well established in 32 variations, and the elements of each variation carries on an unified relation with the theme.
Each variations main musical theme was the basis foundation, in which triplet, septuplet and syncopated rhythm was defined in various ways. Through such a musical piece Beethoven expressed his individualistic method of musical creation within the confines of the traditional Baroque style. Therefore, the passage of variations demonstrated Beethoven's unique personality and "art of music" with great emphasis.
