Although Franz Peter Schubert(1797-1828) lived to be a short life, 31 he composed music to the prodigious number of 1200 for life and about 650 pieces of music more than half of those were Lieder. The purpose of this study is to get the better understanding of the characteristic of Schubert song and perform more artfully. This new concept was to join word and word and music. Schubert represented the sentiment of the lyrics and suggestion on the background by using a piano and other instruments in the accompaniment.
This thesis is focused on the ≪Vier Canzonen, D.688≫ composed by F. Schubert who was a great romantic composer with the marvelous gift, which had drawn the beautiful melodies from the poetry. In particular, through his lieder, a variety of forms, musical agreement to the poetry, autogenous and operation of harmony, and piano-accompaniment are quite characterized.
≪Vier Canzonen, D.688≫ was composed in 1820 and its musical motif had started to be formed from his interests in the Italian music and his life long respect of Pietro Metastasio(1698-1782), a great librettist at time. Schubert had completed a quite number of musical works with the poems of librettist and clergyman Pietro Metastasio and J. A. Vitorelli(1688-1752).
This masterpiece consists of four songs, the first ‘Non t'accostar all'urna’ and the second ‘Guarda, che bianca luna’ composed from the poems of Vitorelli, the third ‘Da quel sembiante appresi’ and the fourth ‘Mio ben ricordati’ from the poems of Metastasio, including death, love affairs, moon, bitter grief, sigh of love, and imminent love, in the texts of each one. As a whole, this work consists mostly in articular sounds with ease rhythms, formations and compass. And so ordinary people could get easy access to it.
As a whole, this ≪Vier Canzonen≫, based on the idividually isolated texts with no direct connection, has a organic unity in it's rhythems, melodies with chromatic scale and piano accompaniment. Like the other works of Schubert, a close connection between the poetry and music could be found in the ≪Vier Canzonen≫. From the view of that, this work must be one of the masterpieces of Schubert's, even though it's words were written in Italian.
By analyzing this work, Schubert's great talents were found again, such as the wonderful creation of rhythm, appoprate from of composition harmonized poems with music, expending the role of accompaniment and using diverse materials for music.
