ABSTRACT

Research of Lines in Contemporary Abstract Painting - mainly about my works -

At sunrise of the twentieth century, because of big changes and developments in all fields of the world, fine arts started to research purity of expression and newly defined its meaning. Namely, expression in paintings is not a representation but a symbol, and its theme does not need to be connected to an object but can appear as the pure form of elements such as point, line, surface and color. Among the elements, a line is considered the most basic and important tool. The continuity of a line is the most proper factor to express the spirit of human beings, and the way to express the line can help individuals draw their original characteristics. Those phenomena that the formative elements entered the world of pure expression meaned that the formative elements can express true inner world as well as represent the form of an object.

I want to research into the theory of art of Wassily Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian to find out the background of abstract paintings which had appeared in various changes of times, and I also want to look into the artworks by Cy Twombly, Hans Hartung and Mark Tobey to find out how a line, which is the basic and infinite formative element, has developed and improved. Through this research, I'd like to establish the frame of my methodological thought, and be free to create my potential in my future artistic work.

From a view of general flows of fine arts, a line in paintings, which is not a popular expression method at a particular time, has an infinite of possibilities to continuously develop into the various shapes as long as an artist keep asking his/her existence. Therefore, I'm going to progress my research about the inner world expressed by the lines, and examine aspects of drawing using lines significantly.
