Abstract
In the colonial environment, 1920s' Korean poetry emerged and marked the coming of the modern poetry, remarkable for its emphasis on lyricism. Womanin the poetry during this period could be divided into two types. One is the women who were addressed by the male speaker, the women who were not the subjects of the poetry, but the "other." For this type, the male speaker compares the mystified body of the "other" to Korea before it was colonized, while the destroyed body to colonized Korea. The other type of women was that who were constructed by female poets, and who were the subjects of the poetry formed between traditional and modern times. The female speaker in Han Yong-Un's poetries belongs to the second type. That is, the speaker is female as well as the subject of the poetry.
Han Yong-Un's poetries reproduced again both traditional Korean woman and Korean modern woman appearing after 1920, thereby the ideal modern female image was constructed. He pointed out that ideal female image should be combined between traditional and modern characteristics.
Therefore, first, this thesis will analyze the reproduced female image both of traditional and modern type; how the modern ideal woman was constructed, and then the conclusion will be drawn on his critically visual line on the modern woman. Second, the thesis will pay its attention to how Han Yong-Un reconstructed the modern ideal woman in his text; thereby we can learn how he reconstructed his self in colonized Korea in the modern times.
Han Yong-Un madethe female speaker to escape from the reality without "nim" by the way of memory and fantasy. Meanwhile, he madethe female speaker to submit to the visual line of "nim." Therefore, the ideal woman was reconstructed. Likewise, Han Yong-Un himself also reconstructed his self through escapism and obedience, which indicates that Han Yong-Un realized the limit of his ability after the defeat of 3.1 movement.
Thus, this thesis relates the female image in Han Yong-Un's poetry, Korean modern female image with Han's modern ideology, with the hope that the analysis will be useful for the study of the modern women's life and desire shown in the poetries.
