The Frequency and Related Factors of Emergency Treatment by Some Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

To find the frequency and related factors of emergency treatment by emergency medical technician (EMT), a questionnaire survey was made toward 80 EMTs who participated in continuing education class for EMTs performed during the period of June 25th to June 26th, 2008 and 53 EMT employed at 119 first aid teams of fire stations located in Gwangju Metropolitan City and Mokpo City. The results are as follows: 1. Average frequency of 23 items of emergency treatment by EMT was 197.9±665.9 times a year, but the variations of frequencies among subjects were very big. The majority did not perform some item of emergency treatment, while some EMTs performed many times. 2. As one item of primary evaluation and emergency treatment, the average frequency of intravenous (IV) linkage was 197.9±665.9 times a year, and the frequency was statistically significantly related with sex (P<0.01), institution employed (P<0.10) and the importance recognition of this item (P<0.05). 3. As one item of secondary evaluation and emergency treatment, the average frequency of monitoring by electro-cadiogram(ECG) was 374.9±1,341.7 times a year and the frequency was significantly (P<0.05) related with sex. Female EMTs performed more frequently than male. 4. The factors related with 11 items of primary evaluation and emergency treatment was sex (P<0.10), marital status (P<0.10), the grade of EMT certification (P<0.10), and the confidency of primary evaluation and emergency treatment (P<0.10). 5. The factors significantly related with 12 items of secondary evaluation and emergency treatment was the grade of EMT certification (P<0.001), resident area (P<0.10), and the experience of guidance by doctors (P<0.10). 6. The factors significantly related with overall 23 items of emergency treatment was resident area (P<0.05) and the grade of EMT certification (P<0.001).

In conclusion to keep the appropriate frequency of emergency treatment practice by EMT, active efforts to promote the importance and confidence recognition of EMT with more guidance from doctors are necessary, especially toward male EMT, EMT who has 2nd class certification, and EMT who works in small city or rural area. Also continually appropriate evaluation and analysis about the emergency treatment practice by EMT are required.
