A Study on Philological Characteristics of 󰡔Yeokdaesijoseon󰡕

The purpose of this study was to examine the purpose of Lee Byeong-gi's publishing 󰡔Yeokdaesijoseon󰡕 in 1940 by collecting only ancient ones at the time when modern sijos took root in the scene to a certain degree. The publication of anthologies practically stopped after the middle 1920s when the movement of sijo restoration started. Ancient sijos were introduced under the title of "Chosun sijos" or "Myeong sijos" in various magazines with few sijo collections published. As a gyoju version, 󰡔Yeokdaesijoseon󰡕 included notes about each of its works. Since it was the first attempt by Garam Lee Byeong-gi to include notes in sijo collections, the investigator decided to examine its characteristic patterns.
The sijo collections published in the 20th century were categorized into anthologies that valued musical quality and poetry collections that were intended as reading materials. Just like in the late Chosun Dynasty, there was a focus on anthologies that emphasized musical quality. However, there was a shift from "a culture of listening and singing" to "a culture of seeing and reading" in society. Reflecting the shift, anthologies were gradually replaced by reading materials. And 󰡔Yeokdaesijoseon󰡕 exhibits characteristics as such a reading material.
󰡔Yeokdaesijoseon󰡕 is a sijo collection that's completely intended as a reading material and pursued only literary quality discarding musical elements of sijos. Thus there was the full-blown creation of modern sijos where musical quality was excluded. But the problem was that there should be something to refer to when creating modern sijos. It was around that time when collections of ancient sijos were born in the form of a reading material containing many masterpieces of high literary or artistic value. Since they understood sijos were creations of individual writers and sijo collections were reading materials to read and appreciate, they placed the greatest importance on pyeong sijos whose authors were known and which presented individuals' dear memories in simple forms. 󰡔Yeokdaesijoseon󰡕 was no exception selecting and containing works whose literary and artistic value was high rather than sijos that were proper for singing purposes.
󰡔Yeokdaesijoseon󰡕 is a gyoju version that offered historical research based on vast amounts of literature data. In addition to providing notes for difficult words and phrases, it adopted the modern notation method to present the works instead of paraphrasing them into modern language. It also provided ample explanations about the motives, backgrounds, and writers. Such attempts by Lee paved the way for the collections of ancient sijos published later, which gives huge significance to his 󰡔Yeokdaesijoseon󰡕. It's especially noteworthy that he set up his own criteria based on a large group of ancient literature and tried to research the writers with as many facts as possible. In fact, his research of the writers seems to have been reflected in textbooks later to a great degree. All those findings add educational significance to 󰡔Yeokdaesijoseon󰡕.
