An Analytic study on the "Pour le piano" by C.A.Debussy

C.A.Debussy (1862~1918),who originates musical impressionism which played an important part in the 20th century music, is a composer who tried to break from romanticism of Germany. He sought after new style of music which produces a descriptive impressionism by regarding expression and impression as important elements. He ignored traditional functions of music, such as harmony, form, rhythm and melody. He invented a delicate and unique tone color in order to employ his own composition techniques. Musical impressionism was closely related to other arts and all of them contributed to the development of impressionism.
One of his piano works is a suite of three movements 'Prélude', 'Sarabande', and 'Toccata'. The work is generally composed of three parts of A-B-A. There often appears pentatonic scale, whole-tone scale and modes in this work. He intends to create the impressionist color by using 7th chord, 11th chord and dissonant chords which have been prohibited in traditional harmony. The first ‘Prélude’ tries to avoid obvious tone in order to express the entire obscure atmosphere through the frequent use of the whole-tone scale; The second 'Saraband church modese' employs church modes, and also emphasizes the color taste of the music by employing the 7th chord, parallel chords and added not chords, in order to display the definite changes in dynamics. The third 'Toccata' is the part which needs much compositional techniques, like quick tempos and various rhythms. For this part, only abundant harmony can make the music full of color taste.
This thesis intends to explore the musical form and compositional techniques in in order to make some contribution to the understanding of the musical characteristics of impressionism and its background, as well as to the better playing of the work. In order to analyze this work, the author first makes a survey on Debussy’s career and his piano works, then draws a conclusion on his compositional techniques and the characteristics of his works. According to the analysis, the author learned how to master Debussy’s musical spirit and his special compositional method, and once more acclaimed that Debussy is absolutely in the highest status in the field of impressionist composers.
