Abstract
Objective: This study compares the postoperative outcomes of patients in whom indwelling bladder catheterization or no catheter was used during transvaginal hysterectomy.
Methods: 225 women undergoing inpatient transvaginal hysterectomy were randomly assigned to have an indwelling Foley cathter for 24 hours or no catheter during transvaginal hysterectomy. Data regarding postoperative morbidity were recorded, and midstream urine for urinalysis and culture was obtained 2days, 7days and 6weeks after transvaginal hysterectomy.
Results: The study groups were simmilar with demographics and surgical indications. There was a higher incidence of fever in the catheter group, but No difference in the incidence of positive urine cultures between the study groups at 2days, 7days and 6weeks.
Conclusion: Indwelling catherterization appears unnecessary on uncomplicated transvaginal hysterectomy.
