- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to evaluate of the effects of decortication when bone grafting on the defect area around an implant.
The author used six 12 weeks old dogs. The author extracted their mandibular premolars and implanted three tooth-ash coated fixtures after 4 weeks in each side. Experiments were subdivided into 3 groups. Control group had a defect left unfilled with a bone. Group 1 had a defect that was filled with Tutoplast without decortication and group 2 had a defect that was filled with Tutoplast with decortication. After 4 and 8 weeks of fixture implantation, each group was sacrificed. After taking an x-ray, the implant and surrounding bone were harvested, evaluated, and compared with the bone formation activity in the histological aspect.
The results were as follows;
1. In every experimental group, the 8-week group showed more bone formation than the 4-week group.
2. In 4-week group, the group filled with bone graft with decortication revealed larger new bone formation area than shown in the group that had a defect area left unfilled with bone and the group filled with bone graft without decortication.
3. In the 8-week group, the group that had bone graft without decortication and the group treated both decortication and bone graft showed more bone formation than the group prepared only in bone defect area.
4. In case of placing bone graft in 8-week group, the group with decortication showed larger new bone formation area but the differences were not statistically significant.
So, according to the results of this study, decortication increases early bone formation after implant placement and in comparison between two groups, the case with bone graft showed increased bone formation than the case without bone graft as time passes.
