- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to evaluate the interrelation between distal caries and canal types of mandibular 1st molar and bilateral symmetry the 1st molar with distal caries. Three examiners interpreted distal caries of mandibular 1st molar through radiographs and clinical records that had been evaluted the root canal types during endodontic treatment. A total of 1405 cases were investigated in this study and the results were as follows:
1. The distal caries of the mandibular 1st molar was 55.2% (775/1405) and there were not statistically significant difference among examiners.
2. The most common distal canal type of the mandibular 1st molar with distal caries was type III and there were statistically significant difference among root canal types (p<0.05).
3. In the bilateral symmetrical evaluation using panoramic view, the bilateral coincidence was 57.6% and there were statistically significant difference among examiners (p<0.05).
In conclusion, the distal caries of the mandibular 1st molar was interrelated with the type III root canal system. We must be confirm the presence of the disto-lingual root during endodontic treatment of the mandibular 1st molar with distal caries.
