- Abstract
- The nasal bone fracture is the most common type of facial bone fracture and most nasal bone fractures involve the septum. The cartilaginous septum is important for the support of the distal nose and for the maintenance of the nasal airway. But nasal septal fractures combined with nasal bone fractures are usually unrecognized and untreated at the time of injury. Consequently, a fractured septum unfavorably affects the alignment of the nasal bone during the healing process. We examed 215 patients treated nasal bone fracture using computerized tomography from March 2006 to July 2008 and 86 patients(40%) were combined with nasal septal fracture. The classification of nasal septal fracture was done by computerized tomography. Class 1 : Septum is straight(1.2%). Class 2 : Septum deviates from the midline by less than one half of the distance from the midline to the nasal turbinate(47.7%). Class 3 : Septum deviates from the midline by more than one half of the distance from the midline to the nasal turbinate(33.7%). Class 4 : Septum deviates so much that it is near contact to the nasal turbinate(17.4%).
The classification of the nasal septal fracture using computerized tomography will be helpful for accurate diagnosis and preoperative planning of the correction of nasal bone and septal fracture.
