- Abstract
- Aims : This study was performed to investigate the association between serum adiponectin levels and the metabolic syndrome in some rural adults.
Methods : The study subjects were 1,920 adults aged 40-70 years living in Naju City, Chollanamdo. The data were collected from questionaries, physical examinations and blood tests. We defined the metabolic syndrome based on the NCEP/ATP III, while abdominal obesity was assessed based on the Asia-Pacific guidelines. By dividing the adiponectin levels of study subjects in quartiles, we analyzed the association between the metabolic syndrome and serum adiponectin levels.
Results : The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 42.6% for total study subjects(35.2% for men and 47.5% for women). The prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its five components decreased in accordance with the increase of serum adiponectin levels. After adjustment for age, occupation, education status, household income and body mass index, the odds ratio(OR) for metabolic syndrome decreased in accordance with the increase of adiponectin levels. In the case of men, the OR of the group with second, third and fourth adiponectin quartile compared to that of the group with first adiponectin quartile significantly decreased to 0.54(95% CI 0.33~0.89), 0.53(0.32~0.88), and 0.21(0.12~0.39). In the case of women, the OR of the group with third and fourth adiponectin quartile compared to that of the group with first adiponectin quartile significantly decreased to 0.40(0.26~0.64) and 0.29(0.19~0.44).
Conclusions : Serum adiponectin levels are associated with the metabolic syndrome in Korean rural adults. Further study is required to find cause and effect relationship with the physiologic mechanism of adiponectin levels and metabolic syndrome.
