This study aims to examine the transmission of Doseon tale from various angles, interpret its meaning and find out its value. Doseon tale was changed depending on transmitters' consciousness and views of world through Doseon. Today Doseon shown in tale represents the character who absorbed the awareness and sense of value of the people, the revolutionist and the ruling classes. Therefore this study is to examine various characteristics of Doseon, extract the truth of tale inherent in the tale and show the aspects of Doseon tale for generations. It also considers the aspects and changes of its transmission and world recognition and coping methods of transmission groups of the tale based on the period that Doseon tale was transmitted.
Chapter II discriminated the reality of Doeson through his life from Doseon in tale. Doseon (827~898) was born at Yeongam as a zen monk succeeding to religious vein of Hyecheol from Dongnisanmungye sect in the late period of Shilla, stayed at Okryongsa Temple, Gwangyang for 35 years and died there. He had the eye of geomancy through his master Hyecheol who had the influence of Gangseo style in China.
Chapter III defines story with clear motif among related literatures as literature tale, presents 30 tales based on these materials and collects 107 oral tales through various data. It also divides a character's life into 'birth story', 'activity story', and 'entering nirvana story' by tale classification standard.
Chapter IV gathers literature and oral materials to examine the characteristics of transmission by periods and divides them into Goryo, Joseon, Premodern and Modern periods.
Doseon tale of the Goryo period was used as the mediator for the myth and achievement of the ruling classes. Doseon became a mysterious character through Doseon tale and then such a mysterious person foretold the propitious site where Wang Geon of Goryo would be born. Consequently, it extended the mythology of founding of Goryo. But, in the Joseon period, Doseon himself was admired in Doseon tale and it was confirmed that Doseon firmed his status newly as cultural hero. Another feature of the Joseon period is the participation of monk class. In the Joseon period, many temples were suffered from the policy for worship of Confucianism and oppression of Buddhism. Buddhists tried to maintain well-being and order of temples using Doseon tale as a means to enhance their position.
In premodern and modern tales, tales were divided centering around regions without transmission of Doseon tale. It was found that its transmitters' recognition of Doseon was discriminated. Doseon was described as the figure of mysterious birth and heroic competence mainly around his birthplace, Yeongam, but he was described as the common man at other regions. In addition, he was introduced as a famous geomancer within his tale with the prevalence of geomancy in the Joseon period or as a foolish man who was scolded by ghost.
Chapter V examines the ideas of transmitter group centering around tale interpretation of chapter IV. While Goryo's royal authority inserted Doseon tale with a view to borrow his transcendental power into making the foundation of Goryo a mythology, Confucianists expressed independent foreign policy with China through Doseon. The monk class used Doseon tale for representing their will to revive Buddhism which was losing its identity by Joeson's oppression against Buddhism and the people expressed their optimistic view of world through Doseon tale.
Chapter VI investigates the modern application of Doseon tale. Since it is disappearing in modern times and has been unified under the influence of mass communication, ways of popularizing it such as publication of children book or production of Doseon tale animation should be sought.
Doseon story was reproduced as a performance at Hwasun Unjusa Festival. There is a way to develop his relic site by the region with Doseon tale, for instance Yangsan village with Okryongsa temple in Gwangyang, where attracted many tourists with various culture events related to Doseon like 'Zen Master Doseon Village'. Moreover Gurim village at Yeongam where Doseon was born needs to seek how to activate regional culture related to Doseon tale based on Yangsan village in Gwangyang as a model.
This study tried to examine Doseon tale in various ways including meaning of transmission of Doseon tale and ideas of Doseon tale by classes. Doseon tale contains the whole characteristics of character tale and various ways to regain the identity of Doseon have been sought in many areas. It is expected that new Doseon can be found through the investigation of Doseon tale started in the area of tale.
