This thesis analysis Paul Hindemith, which was one of the performance program for this researcher`s degree.
Paul Hindemith(1895 ~ 1963), a Germany composer representing the 20th century, has composed many musics of various genres such as opera, symphony, chamber music, film music, ballet music, etc. Among these music, Sonata for Flute and Piano (1936), is his only flute sonata.
This music, a sonata made of three movements, accommodates various musical features of Baroque music. To specify the type, Movement 1 is Heiter bewegt of 4/4 beats and expanded sonata-allegro with a structure of A-B-A and long coda. Movement 2 is Sher langsam of slow 3/4 beats and though it is very slow, it has sonata - allegro type with a structure of A-B-A and brief development. Finally, Movement 3 is composed of 2 parts as follows: Rondo which is Sehr lebhaft of 6/8 beats and Marsch of 2/2 beats.
This music is a combination of two songs. Movement 1 and Movement 2 use a counterpoint for development of theme of sonata within the classic type of sonata.
For the melody, 4th interval and 5th interval are highlighted over the whole movements based on the medieval church mode. Flute and piano are equally played and imitation, transposition, reduction and expansion of counterpoint voices are used for thematical development. It is music with counterpoint composition and reflects the influence of Baroque music in its developmental way.
In respect to rhythm, it uses repetition of thematic rhythms, syncopation through change of accents, sequential progress of themes with a use of rhythm, ostinato rhythm, and cross rhythm. As the thematical rhythms are freely changed into various rhythms, we can see logical composition from them.
For harmony, the main melody is used as a tone. Actually, as B♭for Movement 1, B♭, b-B for Movement 2 and B♭for Movement 3 are used as representative melodies, a unified tonality is achieved.
This song ends with a plagal cadence in which flute and piano show contrary motion. Dissonance is resolved into simple consonance at the cadence and music ends.
has simple, unique and vivid atmosphere by which features of flute and piano are well described. As well, it has the musical view of Hindemith who pursued popular and practical music and features of neo-classicism style he established.
Finally, this study was to review Hindemith who has much attention from flute players and interpret his music for playing, but unfortunately this study was not able to review all of the experimented techniques and many relevant studies. So this study suggests that capable musicians should pay more attention to new interpretation and research.
