A Study on Piano Sonata in b minor Op.58 of F. Chopin

This Article is a study on the F. Chopin's Piano sonata Op.58, which is the repertory of my graduate recital. Frederic Francois Chopin who was a composer also a pianist during the Romantic era of the 19th century has developed various techniques of romantic color of the harmony. Most of his works are for piano performance, and he is a unique comporser of Romantic era, who has expressed his poetic images by piano. In this study, the researcher tried to examine how Chopin is expressing the theme and treat the formation, and how express the chracteristics of the melody to compare the classical formation with his work that find out some result of the examination. The Chopin Piano Sonata Op.58 take a form of Classical Sonata. This piece is composed of four movement. First movement was a sonata form with fast tempo, second movement was ternary style of Scherzo, third movement was slow ternary style and fourth movement was a fast and liberal rondo form. The tones of first and fourth movement were b minor, the orignal sub-dominant Major for second movement, and B Major, a parallel key, for third movement. For harmony progression using chromatic scale which were not present in the classical works and enharmonic were applied besides various altered chords such as dominant 7 and diminished 7, and 3rd, 4th transitions of relative keys, This piece advanced with the changes of rhythms by dotted notes form, triplet form, and various decorative ornament form and it fully expressed the capabilities of the piano at that time by applying chromatic scaled melodies which radically ascend or descend. As a result, Chopin's created its unique musical tone by freely selecting the structural forms of various tones, melodies and harmony, and rhythm based on the sonata style, a traditional form of romanticism, thus playing an important role in piano music in the era of romanticism.
