Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to find the concept and changes on space appeared in the change from the minimal space to the post-minimal space for the visualized part that is based on the aesthetic generality for the issue of 'emptiness' of the post-minimal space appeared in the work of the researcher.
Today, after the industrial society, the information society brought the enrichment of materials with the advancement of science and technology following the classic physics, however, the accompanied view of world in determinism and mechanism also brought the fundamental division effect of ideology, sentiment and profit of individual by the social division. The individualism of contemporary society has invited the crisis in ethics, including the trend of neglecting the human mind and sentiment, and the balance of goods and mind that deepens as time passes has brought the incurable illness to the contemporary civilization.
Under the contemporary civilization, people fear the time to encounter with their inner self and lose the balance of mind from the conflict with the materialistic desire under the flood of mass communication and advertisement. The dissipation and class division of society in space and time would become deepen to add to the instability and loneliness, resulting in exponential growth of patients who require the treatment of psychologic analysis as well as in increase of sales for tranquilizers and sleeping pills. People who stay awakened under the contemporary civilization call for people to return to nature to regain the harmony, however, the contemporary people who have the science to advance to make the high level of technological society do not see the simple path to turn to nature. Although the harmony of the material and mind is hard to see, and there is no short cut, it may be the starting point for new review for the view on materials.
Another interest for this researcher is to have more enriched and familiar omni-potential view on universe, after breaking away from the remains of the classic physics in dried mechanical view point on nature or simplified materialistic view point of world.
In order to solve the theoretical conflict of magnetic field phenomenon that was conspicuously appeared at the end of 19th century, Einstein analyzed closely on the subject of observation and the person of observation to establish the theory of relativity.
Time is relative one that has different flow for same time depending on the observing persons in different location. While the classic physics looks at the multiple nature from one in speculative method and considers an object to exist only in the three dimensional space, this researcher attempts to look at the multiple nature for a single nature with the intuitive method for the theme in 'space' and look at the change of existence in transcendental way, namely, the works of method to look into the four dimensional level of time and space, and the theory is to be specified under this thesis.
Contemporary physics indicates the theory of relativity and quantum physics emerged in the 20th century, and its view on nature has a great accomplishment in respective field by the method of classic physics, and this advancement of science brought unlimited sense of confidence on the methods of physics for the western civilization in the 18th and the 19th centuries. The classic physics ascertained that human may understand all phenomenons of nature with rational logic and men may take on the position of omnipotent person someday. The basic concepts of classic physics, such as, the absolute time and absolute space, cause and effect, quantitative substance and other concepts of classic physics showed their fallacy by the theory of relativity of Einstein, and the solid backbone of the classic physics, the cause and effect, was fallen into the concept that was unable to use in the world of atomic physics by having Heisenberg to introduce the uncertainty principle to establish the quantum dynamics, and the simple quantitative volume thought of as in the classic physics was appeared as a mysterious being with the full of self-contradiction and unable to identify beyond the reasonable understanding in the quantum physics.
The basic attitude of classic physics in observing the nature was the pure objectivism. The subjects of observation is 'being there' regardless of subjectivity that the physics have fully endeavored in finding out the quantitative attributes, the invariable characteristics of the subjective existence, and accordingly, the subjectivity that would bring the invariable and uncertain result during the course of observation has to be excluded.
Therefore, the intrinsic nature of color or sound belonging to the subjective sensitivity has been replaced with the number of objective wavelength or vibration, and the sensitive reaction has been replaced with the camera, vibration membrane, thermometer, and others. In addition, each of the space containing the objects is distorted by different rhythm and it indicates that there is no absolute space for all space having no 3-dimensional space of homogeneity of Euclid geography with physical phenomenon. Accordingly, all physical observation could be considered as coming from the difference in observation figure depending on the place and time of the observation. Einstein prepared the co-variant formula that could resolve the problem of observation difference and commonly used in all observations, and in addition, the two independent principles in the classic physics, the ‘law of conservation of mass’ and the 'law of energy conservation', were bound in one principle, and this formula is widely known as the theoretical basis of the advancement of the nuclear power.
According to the theory of relativity in the contemporary physics, the space is not three dimensional and the time is not separate body, and the two are closely related to form the four dimensional 'time and space' series. The 'empty space’ has lost its implication in the science on entire universe, astrophysics or theory of universe, and the concept of solid object has been crushed in the science of boundlessly small things, the atomic physics. As such, even under the contemporary physics, this is the time to have the abstraction on the spatial object, and it is the time to formulate the fundamental properties of time and space in relativity.
It is important to have the aesthetic formation and formativeness of work products for artists, but it is a fact that the desire of expression by the artists have increased for the 'mental causes' due to the drastically changing sociability and multi-variable social phenomenon. This is the stage to research and produce the work products with the goals of visualizing the combination of the object (substance) appeared to our visible eyes and the non-substances not visible to the eyes to contain the identity including the mentality, philosophy and others of this researcher, and this thesis is to write the theoretical process on the outcome of it.
The consistent interest and goal of this researcher from the time of early work on the 2-dimensional plane work has been the consistent study on how to express the combination of the image actually shown in our view and the mentality contained within the inner self of human, and the presentation was made with the outcome on the visual work product that is the basis of the contents of this thesis (work product exhibited from July 13, 2007 to July 19 at the Art Hall of Joseon University). This is the expression of space appeared as the objects and cause of mentality of human, cause of nothing, namely, emptiness. In other words, the point of expressing the invisible mentality in expressing to the space not grasped on hand as the work (visual) is the hard part of the work as the artist, and was the hard process for the researcher of this thesis.
The object appeared on the surface was seemed as the 'discrete object', the weapon for the minimalists of the US in 1960s, and the surfaced actual space was seemed as the incidentally appeared actual space, and the biggest task for this researcher is the issue of overcoming the aforementioned perception to resolve. In this thesis, overcoming of the above problem was targeted and the process to describe under the point of view of art history would be the goal of this research.
