Abstract
The cephalometric radiograph has been offered an information of 2-dimensional antero-posterior length in nasopharyngeal area to evaluate the adequacy of airway. This study was performed to observe not only the antero-posterior length but also the lateral width of nasopharyngeal area which can be done by 3-dimensional images by CBCT. Eleven male and 12 female sample that matched in the criteria of no specific skeletal discrepancy of facial region, Class I molar relationship, with no missing teeth and no experience of orthodontic treatment. The anterior-posterior and the lateral width of nasopharyngeal area at the 4 levels of SPAS (measurement of airway behind soft palate along parallel line to Go-B plane), MAS (measurement of airway along parallel line to GO-B line through P), IAS (measurement of airway along Go-B line), and HPH (measurement of hypopharyngeal area along parallel line to Go-B line) were measured and the following results were obtained:
1. All the measurements of lateral width were greater than those of antero-posterior length.
2. The SPAS showed the highest value in both antero-posterior and the lateral width, HPH and IAS showed the lowest values in lateral width and antero-posterior length respectively.
3. The ratio between the antero-posterior length and the lateral width showed the range of 0.38-0.61.
4. The highest ratio of the antero-posterior length against the lateral width was seen at the level of HPH.
5. Similarly, the MAS and IAS showed relatively small ratio of the antero-posterior width against the lateral width.
6. Nasopharyngeal airway showed the largest diameters both in antero-posterior and lateral dimension at the level of SPAS, smaller at the level of MAS, IAS and smallest at the level of HPH in the lateral width, but smallest at the level of MAS, IAS and slightly increased value at the level of HPH in the antero-posterior length.
From the above results, we should recognize the information of the lateral width of nasopharyngeal airway other than the information of the antero-posterior length to evaluate the adequacy of airway.
