- Abstract
- More and more contact among people of different cultual background is becoming common. As the patterns of cross-cultural contact increase, misunderstanding and distortion are increasing also in cross-cultural communication. To solve many problems like these, we have to understand the diversity of culture and we have to acquire knowledge concerning cross-cultural communication.
Importance of culture education in foreign language education is rising more and more nowadays, with cultural interchanges between many countries. Especially French is language of diplomacy and lingua franca of Europe's elite. Acquirement of knowledge about custom, their cultural background and way of thinking help to communication with others. Language is inseparable from the culture. Consequently, we can learn about culture through the language, also language through the culture.
The aim of this thesis, reconsider the status of french by means of an instrument of communication, and make clear relationship between the language and the culture.
In Chapter 1, before discussing, described about the whys and wherefores of education through relationship between the language and the culture. It focused the importance of education of cross-culture communication in Korea, as a foreign language and clarified the necessity of its research and purpose. As the importance of cross-culture education is becoming more influential these days.
In Chapter 2, described theoretical foundation focused 'Semiotics' , 'Communication' and 'Cultural Semiotics'. We can't explain the culture and communication without Semiotics.
In Chapter 3, this chapter treated of cultural position of french and cultural communication focusing on the wine and fashion. Through recognize about cultural position of french, at this point in time, we can watch that how much communication is possible.
For good communication, having an accurate language competence in a target language as well as understanding the social and cultural background where the target language is spoken and used is required. Especially, to minimize the misunderstandings, mistakes, and cultural shock caused by lack of understanding of cultural difference existed among countries, right education for a good cross-cultural communication is very essential.
In this thesis, we brought out the crucial point about values, cultural value classification and cross-culture interactions. Being aware that differences occur is the first step toward effective communication. So, we'll have more interest and motivation in learning a foreign language. Once again, I hope that many peoples will engage in more active and fruitful study on cross-cultural communication in the near future.
