Abstract
Gwangju city is dynamically advancing to the 'central city of Asian Culture' from the 'hometown of art and tradition' in cultural era of the 21st century. For Gwangju to lead the topography of global culture and art into a new dimension through experiments, creation, research, education and exchanges of Asian artists and to be a base to realize freedom and peace and social integration, the role and function of Gwangju City Art Museum are very meaningful.
For Gwangju to develop as a cultural city, Gwangju City Art Museum should develop programs in which community people with various ages and classes can participate for education of culture and art as well as simple art education. And in addition to collection of various works of art as a field of cultural education beyond the place where works of art are stored and preserved, it should develop exhibition programs with features of local culture, which will maximize education effect.
Therefore, this study compares educational programs of Fondation de l'Hermitage in Russia which is a leading art museum in Europe with ours. For the purpose, this study uses a match method to compare the educational programs of the two countries. And this study specifies the three elements of museum education suggested by Caston : museum component, educational component, and subjective component, based on which he educational programs are analysed.
Therefore, this study is to develop a developmental plan of the museum as an educational field in which cultural and artistic mind of the people is enhanced and with which Gwangju can be an internationally leading cultural city. Therefore, this study suggests that Gwangju City Art Museum should develop various and characteristic educational programs which can contribute to cultural education of the people and development of regional art and culture as an important educational field.
