Abstract
Background and Objectives : Despite ongoing developments of treatment protocols for laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) show only partial better outcome which has been attributed to a lack of therapy individualized to tumor biological properties. Various studies showed that galectin-8 in widely expressed in tumor tissues as well as in normal tissues, and the level of galectin-8 expression may correlate with the malignancy of human squamous cell carcinoma. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the expression of galectin-8 and to investigate their correlation with the primary stage, nodal involvement, clinical stage and histologic grade in the squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx. Materials and Method : Paraffin-embedded tissue specimens from 77 patients, who were diagnosed as LSCC between 1993 and 2007, were immunohistochemically stained for galectin-8. Results : Immunohistochemical analysis showed the expression of galectin-8 in 76 of 77 cases (98.7%). Strong positive expression of the galectin-8 were correlated with T-stages, nodal stages and clinical stages. Conclusion : Analysis of galectin-8 protein expression in relation to T-stages, nodal stages and clinical stages of the tumors exhibited significant correlation. However, histopathologic grades were not correlated with galectin-8 expression in LSCC. The expression of galectin-8 protein can be used as a prognostic factor in LSCC.
