Abstract

This study investigate that School Space must be activity-oriented for child growth and development, based on the three case studies of elementary schools located in Gwangju Metropolitan City. The following questions were investigated. 1. What type of activity space do the schools have? 2. Why do the activities take place there? 3. How are the activity spaces structured?

Elementary schools allow children to learn academics, and acquire organized knowledge. As the initial stage for preparing to entries into society, it influences child growth and development as well as children’s personalities through group experience and activities.

Therefore, this study examined, compared, and analyzed the shape and form of the ground space, the surroundings space, and the interior spaces, as well as structural pattern of activity space, types of activities, and sizes of facility and unit spaces. This study therefore, aimed to find the structure of activity spaces.

Based on the findings of the design of schools and arrangement of classrooms of elementary schools regarding patterns and styles of activity space that is suitable for daily activities of schools and space for students’ static and dynamic actions, positive effects, such as better facility space and reorganization of spaces that can help growth and development of students can be expected.

Specifically, The elementary school design will be a design that meet the contractions of design requirements and selection of designs based on logical programming and their design methods.

And it will be a design that meets the requirements focusing on the essence of the school design as well as students and teachers who are the main bodies of school life. It will also be a design approach considering child personality development and characteristics of activities.
